Himalayan rugs are often made with natural fibers and can feature delicate handwoven or hand-knotted construction. Proper cleaning requires attention to the rug's fiber, dyes, weave, age, and condition. This is a Ginko tree design which is a classic Nepalese pattern.
At Jafri Rugs, the cleaning process begins with a detailed inspection to determine the appropriate treatment. Their published process includes pre-treatment, specialized dust removal, soaking, washing both sides of the rug with specialized soaps and shampoos, rinsing, and drying. Antique, silk, moth-damaged, and water-damaged rugs receive additional care.
1. Inspection & Pre-Treatment
The rug is examined for stains, wear, color stability, fiber condition, and structural damage before the cleaning method is selected.
2. Deep Dust Removal
Specialized equipment is used to remove deeply embedded dust and dry soil before washing. This is important because abrasive particles can contribute to fiber wear.
3. Soaking & Stain Treatment
The rug may be soaked to loosen embedded dirt, pet stains, odors, and other contaminants. Heavily soiled rugs may require additional treatment.
4. Specialized Rug Washing
Jafri washes rugs on both sides using specialized vegetable soaps and shampoos, with the cleaning approach adjusted for the individual rug.
5. Thorough Rinsing
The rug is carefully rinsed to remove dirt and cleaning residues.
6. Controlled Drying
After washing, the rug is properly dried before it is returned to the customer. Jafri also provides pickup and delivery in many of its service areas.
If cleaning reveals damage, Jafri Rugs also offers fringe repair, binding repair, color correction, reweaving, and restoration for fine rugs.
For a valuable or antique Himalayan rug, professional evaluation before cleaning is especially important because improper cleaning can potentially affect delicate fibers, dyes, or the rug's foundation.

I bless the day I found Mr Jafri. As one who has collected rugs for 50 years, I both learned about their value and origins and had them beautifully cleaned and repaired.
Very beautiful rugs there, would have been a difficult decision. Only needed a rug pad this time. When we're in the market again, this is where we'll go. Pete, Delmar, NY
