Mold and Mildew Rug Cleaning and Repair in Malta

October 07, 2026 | Malta, NY

Wool Persian Prayer Rug Cleaning

Wool is commonly used in handmade Persian rugs and provides durability, softness, and a distinctive texture. However, handmade wool rugs still require appropriate cleaning techniques.

Professional cleaning can help remove embedded soil while taking the rug's dyes, pile, foundation, and construction into consideration.

Persian Prayer Rug Stain Removal

Prayer rugs can develop stains from everyday use, spills, dirt, pets, and other household accidents.

Professional stain removal begins with identifying the affected area and evaluating the rug's fibers and dyes. Treatment can then be selected according to the individual rug.

The goal is to address staining and accumulated soil while minimizing unnecessary stress to the rug.

Persian Prayer Rug Repair & Restoration

Cleaning and repair often go together, particularly with older prayer rugs.

Jafri Rugs provides specialized repair and restoration services that may include:

Hand reweaving
Hole and tear repair
Fringe repair
Edge and binding repair
Foundation repair
Moth-damage restoration
Missing-pile repair
Structural stabilization
Color correction

Repair methods are selected according to the rug's construction and the type and extent of damage.

Persian Prayer Rug Reweaving

Holes, tears, and areas of missing pile can compromise the structure of a Persian prayer rug.

Professional reweaving can reconstruct damaged areas while considering the original weave, fibers, colors, and pattern. For an antique or handmade prayer rug, carefully executed restoration can help preserve the rug's original character.

Persian Prayer Rug Fringe Repair

Fringe can become worn, loose, shortened, or detached through regular use.

Jafri Rugs offers professional fringe repair and restoration. The underlying foundation can also be inspected to determine whether additional structural work is needed.

Prayer Rug Moth Damage Repair

Moths can cause holes, missing pile, and weakened foundations in wool Persian rugs.

If moth damage is discovered, Jafri Rugs can evaluate the affected areas and determine whether reweaving, foundation repair, or other restoration work is appropriate.

Persian Prayer Rug Water Damage

Water exposure can cause staining, dye migration, odors, and structural deterioration.

If a Persian prayer rug has been affected by flooding, plumbing leaks, or another water event, professional evaluation is recommended. Jafri Rugs can assess the condition and determine whether specialized cleaning, drying, repair, or restoration is required.

Our Persian Prayer Rug Cleaning Process

1. Inspection

The prayer rug is examined for fiber type, construction, dyes, age, stains, wear, fringe, previous repairs, and structural condition.

2. Dust & Soil Removal

Loose and embedded dry soil is removed before washing to prepare the rug for deeper cleaning.

3. Specialized Cleaning

The rug is cleaned using methods appropriate for its individual fibers, dyes, construction, and condition.

4. Rinsing

The rug is carefully rinsed to remove loosened soil and cleaning residue.

5. Controlled Drying

After cleaning, the rug is dried under controlled conditions to help maintain its shape and condition.

6. Final Inspection

The rug receives a final inspection after cleaning. Any areas requiring additional repair or restoration can be evaluated.

1. Inspection and Assessment • The first step in Jafri Rugs restoration is a detailed inspection to assess the extent of the damage. This includes evaluating areas of wear, unraveling threads, fading colors, and any holes or tears in the rug. Special attention is given to preserving the original design and integrity of the stitching. 2. Cleaning Before Restoration • Before any restoration work begins, the rug must be cleaned thoroughly. Cleaning ensures that any accumulated dirt or stains are removed so that the restoration work can be done on a clean surface. This also helps identify areas that may require special attention during the restoration process. 3. Reweaving Damaged Sections • Reweaving: If the rug has areas of missing or damaged stitches, skilled artisans can reweave the missing sections, matching the original patterns and colors as closely as possible. This requires a high level of expertise to ensure the new stitches blend seamlessly with the rest of the rug. 4. Fringe and Edge Repair • The fringe of a rug is often subjected to wear over time. If the fringe is frayed or missing, it can be reattached or replaced by hand, ensuring that it matches the original design and material. • The edges of the rug may also need reinforcing or re-binding if they have started to unravel. This can be done by re-stitching or using a similar material to secure the edges. 5. Dyeing and Color Restoration • Color Fading: Over time, the dyes in a needlepoint rug may fade due to exposure to sunlight, wear, or improper cleaning. Skilled restoration experts can re-dye the affected areas using professional, colorfast dyes to restore the rug’s original hues. • Matching Colors: When dyeing a rug, it’s critical to match the colors exactly to ensure that the restoration is seamless. This process is usually done by hand to ensure accuracy. 6. Final Inspection • Once all the restoration work is completed, a final inspection is conducted to ensure the rug is restored to its original condition. The rug is checked for any missed areas, color inconsistencies, or stitching issues that may need to be addressed before it’s returned.

Jafri Rug Restoration will do the following: Pre-Cleaning Inspection Examine the Rug: Check for visible signs of damage (holes, tears, fraying) or stains. Look for areas with heavy wear or pet damage. Check Fiber Type: Identify the type of material (wool, silk, synthetic, etc.), as different materials require different cleaning methods. Colorfastness Test: Test a hidden section of the rug for color bleeding. Use a damp cloth to blot the area and check if any dye comes off. If the rug bleeds, it may need special care or professional cleaning. Fringe Condition: Inspect the fringes and edges of the rug for any fraying or damage. If necessary, repair the edges before cleaning. Spot and Stain Treatment Identify Stains: Inspect the rug for stains, spots, or odors. Treat stains immediately before they set. Wool or Synthetic Rug Stains: Use a mild detergent or rug-specific cleaner diluted in water. Apply it to the stained area using a soft cloth or sponge. Gently blot (don’t rub) the stain to lift it. For oil-based stains, a solvent-based cleaner (suitable for the material) can be used. Silk or Delicate Rugs: Use a mild silk-friendly cleaning solution or simply warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the fibers. Dab the stained area with a damp cloth (not soaking wet) and blot gently until the stain lifts. General Rule: Always test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage or fade the fibers. 4. Deep Cleaning For Wool, Synthetic, or Mixed-Fiber Rugs: Prepare Cleaning Solution: Mix lukewarm water with a mild detergent or wool-safe shampoo (for wool rugs). Never use hot water as it can shrink wool. Clean the Rug: Using a soft-bristled brush or sponge, gently scrub the rug in sections, working along the direction of the pile. This ensures that you don’t damage the fibers. Rinsing: After cleaning each section, use a clean damp cloth to wipe away excess soap or detergent, ensuring no residue remains in the rug. Avoid Soaking: Do not soak the rug in water, as excessive moisture can lead to mold or damage to the rug's structure, especially for wool and silk rugs. For Silk Rugs: Professional Cleaning Recommended: Silk rugs are delicate and may not handle water well. Professional dry cleaning or specialized rug cleaning methods are often recommended. If cleaning at home, use minimal water and a silk-safe cleaner. Always test on a hidden area first. Dry cleaning powder can be used as an alternative to water-based cleaning for delicate rugs. 5. Drying the Rug Air Drying: Never use direct heat (like a heater or blow dryer) to dry the rug, as this can cause shrinking or damage. Lay the rug flat in a well-ventilated area, preferably out of direct sunlight. Flip the Rug: Once the front side is dry, flip the rug over to allow the back to dry as well. This will help prevent mold or mildew from forming. Absorb Excess Moisture: If you’ve used a lot of water during the cleaning process, gently blot the rug with a towel to remove excess moisture before it dries completely. 6. Post-Cleaning Grooming Brushing the Pile: After the rug is dry, gently brush the pile with a soft rug brush (or a pet brush) to restore the fibers and fluff up any flattened areas. Always brush in the direction of the pile. Restoring the Silk Shine: If the rug has silk fibers, gently hand-comb the silk pile with a soft brush to restore its natural sheen and smoothness. Edge and Fringe Care: If the rug has fringes, carefully trim any loose or frayed threads, and check for signs of damage. If necessary, repair the fringes before final placement. 7. Final Inspection Check for Streaks or Residue: After the rug has dried and been brushed, inspect the surface for any soap residue or areas that may require additional spot cleaning. Examine the Edges: Ensure that the edges are intact and the fringes are not tangled or damaged. Check for Mold/Mildew: If there’s any lingering dampness, let the rug dry further in a well-ventilated area. 8. Professional Cleaning (If Needed) If your rug is heavily soiled, has extensive stains, or is made from very delicate materials like high-end silk, professional cleaning is highly recommended. Professional rug cleaners have the tools and expertise to properly clean and restore the rug without causing damage.

Saratoga Springs Rug and Tapestry Cleaning and Repair Customer

April 10, 2025 | Saratoga Springs, NY

This was a project six months in the making. The French tapestries are woven artistic remnants of the past, however they had been left in a worn and torn condition. These were authentic French revolution tapestries that required reweaving and entire recreation of the border and field. As this is different from restoring an antique rug, Jafri Rug restoration contacted their weavers in Lyon, France to fix this embroidery. After six months both tapestries were brought back to their original glory and are still considered priceless. Given its woven nature and history these tapestries were originally woven onto a chair or throne and then thru the years came off as a separate tapestry. For tapestries of this quality, do not restore yourself.

Stillwater Persian Kerman Rug Cleaning and Restoration

September 01, 2025 | Stillwater, NY

This is an example of a Lavar Kerman timeless masterpiece rug made in Iran. This rug is no longer able to be produced on the loom. It is over a century old. A rug of this quality comes from the finest weavers of Iran from the town of Lavar but the rug had enormous wear and was destroyed in numerous areas. This type of work can only be performed by hand and Jafri Rug's weavers are skilled artisans who understand the curvilinear characteristics of the rug and can reweave into the wool without making the rug look new. The time to restore this rug took approx 6 months.

Picture 1 shows the pre-restoration work where the rug was showing as worn and the fringe and binding was unraveling and the color was faded.

Picture 2 shows the post-restoration work where the rug was completely rewoven and color restoration was treated on the rug.

Jafri Rug restoration repaired this rug by doing the following:

Pre-Repair Cleaning

A deep cleaning is performed before repairs to remove dirt, oils, and debris that interfere with repair work.
Includes:

Dusting (front and back)
Gentle hand washing with pH-neutral detergents
Rinsing and drying in a temperature-controlled environment

Structural Repairs

These are the most critical to maintain rug integrity:

a. Edge Repair (Overcasting or Binding)

Rewrap or rebind fraying edges to prevent unraveling.
Uses matching wool or cotton thread.
Restores tension and keeps the weft and warp from separating.

b. Fringe Repair or Replacement

Stabilizes or reconstructs the fringe (often the warp threads).
May involve:

Tying off loose fringe
Sewing in new fringe sections
Weaving new fringes into the foundation

c. Hole or Tear Repair

Small holes: patched and reinforced from the back.
Larger holes or tears: require reweaving the foundation (warp and weft), then tying new knots to match the original pattern.

4. Pile Reweaving / Pattern Reconstruction

Rebuilds worn or missing areas by hand-knotting new wool or silk into the structure.
Requires:

Color-matching wool (often hand-dyed)
Matching the knot density, knot type (Turkish or Persian), and pattern

Done by experienced weavers to ensure seamless blending with the original design.

5. Color Restoration

In areas where colors have faded or bled, restorers may:

Touch up color with textile-safe dyes where there is already wool shown in the pile but requires blending of color for consistency in the rug’s colors
Avoid painting, which can damage fibers over time

6. Shearing & Grooming

After repairs, the pile is carefully sheared to match surrounding areas.
Helps ensure a consistent pile height and finish.
Brushing aligns the nap and improves visual consistency.

7. Blocking & Reshaping

If the rug is warped or misshapen:

It’s dampened and laid flat under weight or pinned.
Dried under tension to restore its original shape and prevent buckling.

8. Final Cleaning & Inspection

A final surface clean removes any dust or fibers from the repair.
Inspection ensures:

Seamless repairs
Color and texture matches
Edges are secure and the rug lies flat
