Professional Woven Rug Cleaning and Repair at Jafri Rugs

Woven rugs are handcrafted textiles that require specialized care to preserve their fibers, colors, patterns, and structural integrity. At Jafri Rugs, we provide professional woven rug cleaning, repair, and restoration services for Persian, Oriental, antique, wool, silk, and other handmade woven rugs.

Whether your woven rug needs routine cleaning, stain removal, fringe repair, edge restoration, or extensive reweaving, our experienced rug specialists use careful cleaning and traditional restoration techniques to help protect your rug for years to come.

Expert Cleaning for Woven Rugs

Dirt, dust, pet hair, stains, and other contaminants can become embedded deep within the weave of a rug. Over time, abrasive particles can contribute to fiber wear and deterioration.

Our professional woven rug cleaning process is customized according to the rug's materials, construction, age, dyes, and overall condition.

Our services include:

  • Woven rug cleaning
  • Persian rug cleaning
  • Oriental rug cleaning
  • Wool rug cleaning
  • Silk rug cleaning
  • Antique rug cleaning
  • Handmade area rug cleaning
  • Pet stain and odor removal
  • Spot and stain treatment
  • Moth damage treatment
  • Flood damage cleaning

Before cleaning, each rug is carefully inspected to determine the safest and most effective treatment.

Our Woven Rug Cleaning Process

1. Detailed Inspection

We examine the rug for stains, wear, loose threads, color stability, fringe damage, edge deterioration, moth damage, and other structural concerns.

2. Dust and Soil Removal

Dry soil and abrasive particles are carefully removed before washing. This important step helps prevent embedded dirt from causing additional wear to the rug's fibers.

3. Specialized Washing

Each woven rug receives a cleaning method appropriate for its individual construction and fiber type. Delicate wool, silk, antique, and handmade rugs require specialized treatment to help protect their colors and structure.

4. Stain & Odor Treatment

Stains, pet accidents, odors, and other problem areas are treated according to the rug's materials and condition.

5. Controlled Drying

After cleaning, the rug is thoroughly dried under controlled conditions. Proper drying helps reduce the risk of mildew, excessive moisture, shrinkage, and dye migration.

6. Final Inspection

Once cleaning is complete, the rug is carefully inspected to ensure it has been properly cleaned, dried, groomed, and prepared for return.

Woven Rug Repair & Restoration

Woven rugs can develop damage from years of use, furniture, pets, moths, water exposure, or improper handling. Our woven rug repair and restoration services are designed to address both cosmetic and structural damage.

Depending on the condition of your rug, restoration may include:

  • Hand reweaving
  • Hole repair
  • Tear repair
  • Foundation repair
  • Fringe repair
  • Fringe replacement
  • Edge binding repair
  • Moth damage repair
  • Missing pile restoration
  • Color restoration
  • Hooked rug repair

Woven Rug Reweaving

When sections of a woven rug have been damaged or lost, hand reweaving can reconstruct the affected area. Skilled craftsmen carefully match the existing weave, fibers, colors, knots, and patterns as closely as possible.

Reweaving may be used to repair holes, tears, worn sections, and areas affected by moth or water damage.

The goal is to restore the rug's structural integrity while maintaining the character and appearance of the original handmade piece.

Fringe & Edge Repair

The ends and edges of a woven rug are particularly vulnerable to wear. Damaged fringe, loose foundation threads, and unraveling edges can become increasingly serious if left untreated.

Our woven rug fringe repair and edge binding services help stabilize these areas and prevent further deterioration.

Antique & Handmade Woven Rug Restoration

Antique and vintage woven rugs require additional care because their fibers and foundations may have weakened with age. Restoration techniques are selected carefully to preserve as much of the original material and craftsmanship as possible.

Our specialists can evaluate antique woven rugs for cleaning, structural repairs, fringe restoration, reweaving, and other conservation needs.

Why Choose Jafri Rugs?

At Jafri Rugs, we understand that every handmade rug is unique. A woven rug should not automatically be treated using the same process as conventional wall-to-wall carpeting.

Our approach combines:

  • Professional rug cleaning expertise
  • Traditional restoration techniques
  • Experienced repair craftsmen
  • Specialized equipment
  • Individual rug assessments
  • Cleaning and repair services
  • Attention to delicate fibers and dyes

From routine cleaning to extensive restoration, we provide comprehensive care for your valuable woven rugs.

Protect Your Woven Rug

Regular professional cleaning can help remove abrasive dirt before it causes unnecessary fiber wear. Addressing loose edges, damaged fringe, holes, and other problems early can also help prevent more extensive and costly repairs.

Proper cleaning, maintenance, and restoration can help extend the life of a handmade woven rug and preserve its beauty for generations.

1. Assessment and Inspection: Condition Check: Inspect the rug thoroughly for signs of wear, including fraying edges, missing or damaged knots, stains, or fading. This is essential to assess the scope of restoration work needed. Fabric Type: Identify the materials used (wool, silk, etc.) to ensure the correct restoration techniques and materials are used. Color Matching: Bidjar rugs often feature vibrant and intricate color schemes. Color matching is important for any repairs to ensure the restoration blends seamlessly with the original. 2. Cleaning: Gentle Cleaning: Before restoration, the rug is cleaned to remove dirt and stains. This is typically done by hand, using mild cleaning solutions and techniques that preserve the integrity of the fibers. Drying: After cleaning, the rug must be carefully dried to prevent any damage or shrinkage. 3. Repairing Damaged Areas: Reweaving/Knots: If there are missing or damaged knots, the missing sections will be re-woven by hand. Skilled artisans use the same knotting technique that was used in the original rug to ensure consistency. Fringe Repair: If the fringe is damaged or missing, it can be reattached or replaced using matching fibers. Edge Repair: The rug’s edges may become frayed over time. A repair may involve re-binding the edges to prevent further unraveling. 4. Color Restoration: If the rug has areas with faded or discolored sections, dyes matching the original colors may be applied to restore the vibrancy. This requires careful attention to detail to blend the colors seamlessly.

Pre-Repair Cleaning

  • A deep cleaning is performed before repairs to remove dirt, oils, and debris that interfere with repair work.
  • Includes:
    • Dusting (front and back)
    • Gentle hand washing with pH-neutral detergents so as not to erode the fibers of the rug
    • Rinsing and drying in a temperature-controlled environment

Structural Repairs

These are the most critical to maintain rug integrity:

a. Edge Repair (Overcasting or Binding)

  • Rewrap or rebind fraying edges to prevent unraveling.
  • Uses matching wool or cotton thread.
  • Restores tension and keeps the weft and warp from separating.

b. Fringe Repair or Replacement

  • Stabilizes or reconstructs the fringe (often the warp threads).
  • May involve:
    • Tying off loose fringe
    • Sewing in new fringe sections
    • Weaving new fringes into the foundation

c. Hole or Tear Repair

  • Small holes: patched and reinforced from the back.
  • Larger holes or tears: require reweaving the foundation (warp and weft), then tying new knots to match the original pattern.

4. Pile Reweaving / Pattern Reconstruction

  • Rebuilds worn or missing areas by hand-knotting new wool or silk into the
    structure.
  • Requires:
    • Color-matching wool (often hand-dyed)
    • Matching the knot density, knot type (Turkish or Persian), and pattern
  • Done by experienced weavers to ensure seamless blending with the original
    design.

5. Color Restoration

  • In areas where colors have faded or bled, restorers may:
    • Touch up color with textile-safe dyes where there is already wool shown in the pile but requires blending of color for consistency in the rug’s colors
    • Avoid painting, which can damage fibers over time

6. Shearing & Grooming

  • After repairs, the pile is carefully sheared to match surrounding areas.
  • Helps ensure a consistent pile height and finish.
  • Brushing aligns the nap and improves visual consistency.

7. Blocking & Reshaping

  • If the rug is warped or misshapen:
    • It’s dampened and laid flat under weight or pinned.
    • Dried under tension to restore its original shape and prevent buckling.

8. Final Cleaning & Inspection

  • A final surface clean removes any dust or fibers from the repair.
  • Inspection ensures:
    • Seamless repairs
    • Color and texture matches
    • Edges are secure and the rug lies flat

Jafri Rugs not only cleaned the rug but brought back the vitality of the rug and increased the overall value of the Sultanabad rug. Jafri Rugs antique weavers repaired the rug to its original state and restored a century old rug. The rug required spot treatment and binding and fringe restoration. The rug also had to be cut down a size from its original dimension in order to fit into the room.
