Restoring a woven kilim rug is a delicate process that requires understanding the rug’s structure, materials, and traditional weaving techniques. Kilims are flat-weave rugs, typically made from wool (and sometimes cotton), and have no pile. Restoration focuses on preserving the rug's authenticity while repairing damage such as holes, frayed edges, or faded colors.
Repairing a woven kilim rug depends on the type and extent of damage, Jafri Rug weavers follow the below steps:
Examine the rug for:
Secure the rug on a flat work surface or stretching frame.
If warp threads are broken:
This is often the most critical step because the entire weave depends on the warp foundation.
For holes:
For valuable or antique kilims, restorers often hand-dye yarns to achieve accurate color matching.
If side edges are frayed:
Strong edges help prevent future unraveling.
If the rug ends are damaged:
Sometimes conservation work leaves fringe incomplete intentionally to preserve authenticity.
After structural repairs:

Repairing a woven Turkish kilim requires preserving the original weave, colors, and structure. The exact process varies depending on the damage, Jafri's restoration typically follows these steps:
For valuable or antique Turkish kilims, Jafri generally aims for conservation-quality repairs, preserving as much original material as possible rather than replacing large sections unnecessarily. Color matching, yarn selection, and weave replication are key to maintaining both the rug's appearance and value.
The complexity of the repair depends on the extent of the damage. Small moth holes may take a few hours, while reconstructing large missing sections or intricate geometric motifs can require dozens of hours of hand weaving.

Jafri Rug restoration will do the following step by step:
Rug is inspected under strong lighting for:
Damage (holes, tears, moth damage)
Fiber content (wool, silk, cotton)
Color stability (testing for dye bleeding)
Odors (e.g. pet urine, mildew)
Measurements are recorded; before photos are taken.
Rug is flipped and vibrated or beaten using a rug dusting machine or compressed air.
This step removes up to 80% of dry dirt and sand embedded in the foundation.
Avoided by carpet steamers but critical for longevity.
🧠 Fact: Persian rugs can trap several pounds of grit, which can shred fibers if not dusted out before washing.
Specialists blot dyes with water and pH-neutral cleaning agents to check for bleeding.
If unstable, dye-locking agents are applied or rug is washed carefully in cold water.
Rugs with pet urine or mildew are submerged in odor-neutralizing solutions.
Enzyme-based treatments may be used to break down organic stains before shampooing.
Traditional Persian-style hand washing uses:
Wool-safe, pH-balanced shampoo
Gentle brushing following the nap of the pile
Repeated rinsing with soft water
For extremely dirty rugs, the entire rug may be submerged and agitated in a wash pool.
🚫 Avoid high-pressure or in-home “steam cleaning”—it can cause shrinkage, color bleeding, or structural damage.
Rinsed thoroughly using flowing water or soft spray wands.
Excess water is extracted via a centrifuge wringer or by rolling and pressing.
Rugs are hung in a climate-controlled room or flat-dried on drying beds with airflow.
Wool rugs may take 24–48 hours to fully dry.
Pile is brushed to align the nap and restore softness.
Fringe is combed, dried, and sometimes whitened.
Final inspection checks for odors, stains, stiffness, or repair needs.

A Persian Sumac of this quality is threadbare and quite valuable. The rug in its former condition was destroyed in several areas. The fringe and binding was tearing apart and the field was also worn.
The first image shows the rug in very poor condition with fringe and binding work required as it was fraying. The second image shows how this Persian Sumac rug has been restored to its original condition with fringe and binding that comports to the design and era such as adding tea stained fringe implants to the rug as that was the proper fringe that was of that circa 1900 period. Additionally Jafri Rug restoration sheared this rug to even out the wool on the pile of the rug and added binding that prevents the wool from unraveling any further into the field of the rug and Jafri Rug restoration did the following work:
-Reweaving worn areas where warp and weft is showing
-Refringing as the fringe is torn off
-Rebinding as the binding is unraveling
-Vegetable dyes are fading
-Field of the rug is also showing unevenness in the wool pile
Given the age and value of the rug, this is a rug that should not be sent to any rug store, but should go to Jafri Rug restoration as the weavers are specifically skilled to repair these threadbare rugs and understand the motifs and match the wool dye lot for dye lot. The artistry will maintain the antiquity of the rug and will not make it look newly made and will also raise the value of the rug.
Jafri Rug restoration fixed the rug by doing the following:
1. Assessment and Inspection:
Condition Check: Inspect the rug thoroughly for signs of wear, including fraying edges, missing or damaged knots, stains, or fading. This is essential to assess the scope of restoration work needed.
Fabric Type: Identify the materials used (wool, silk, etc.) to ensure the correct restoration techniques and materials are used.
Color Matching: Persian rugs often feature vibrant and intricate color schemes. Color matching is important for any repairs to ensure the restoration blends seamlessly with the original.
2. Cleaning:
Gentle Cleaning: Before restoration, the rug is cleaned to remove dirt and stains. This is typically done by hand or machine using organic olive oil shampoo foam to cleanse the rug and techniques that preserve the integrity of the fibers.
Drying: After cleaning, the rug must be carefully dried to prevent any damage or shrinkage.
3. Repairing Damaged Areas:
Reweaving/Knots: If there are missing or damaged knots, the missing sections will be re-woven by hand. Skilled weavers use the same knotting technique that was used in the original rug to ensure consistency.
Fringe Repair: If the fringe is damaged or missing, it can be reattached or replaced using matching fibers.
Edge Repair: The rug's edges may become frayed over time. A repair may involve re-binding the edges to prevent further unraveling.
4. Color Restoration:
If the rug has areas with faded or discolored sections, dyes matching the original colors may be applied to restore the vibrancy. This requires careful attention to detail to blend the colors seamlessly.

I bless the day I found Mr Jafri. As one who has collected rugs for 50 years, I both learned about their value and origins and had them beautifully cleaned and repaired.
Very beautiful rugs there, would have been a difficult decision. Only needed a rug pad this time. When we're in the market again, this is where we'll go. Pete, Delmar, NY
