Jafri Rugs fixed this rug by doing the following: 1. Moth Damage in the Field Moths can cause significant damage to wool rugs, especially when the rug is stored in a humid or dark environment. Inspection and Identification: Jafri Rugs carefully inspected to assess the extent of the moth damage. This involves checking the front and back of the rug for signs of infestation. • Moth Treatment: The rug would be treated to eliminate any remaining moths and eggs. This usually involves a deep fumigation process using eco-friendly chemicals or freezing the rug to kill any pests. • Re-weaving or Repairing Damaged Areas: The affected areas would likely require Jafri’s weavers reweaving or patching. The damaged wool would be carefully removed, and new wool fibers, typically dyed to match the original, would be woven into the affected areas to restore the rug's appearance. 2. Worn and Faded Medallion The medallion is a central feature in Persian rugs, and significant wear or fading can take away from the rug’s beauty and

Jafri Rug restoration will do the following:

Cleaning:

Gentle Cleaning is essential for preserving the fibers and colors. Using harsh chemicals or cleaning methods can cause the colors to fade or damage the wool. Professional dry cleaning or washing with mild soaps and water is recommended.

Vacuuming with a low-suction vacuum is often used to remove dirt and dust without disturbing the delicate fibers.

Repairing Damaged Areas:

Reweaving is required for areas with wear, holes, or fraying. Skilled artisans will carefully match the original design and weave to restore damaged sections without altering the original look.

Edge Repairs: The edges need reinforcement to prevent fraying and maintain their structure.

Repairing a woven Turkish kilim requires preserving the original weave, colors, and structure. The exact process varies depending on the damage, Jafri's restoration typically follows these steps:

  1. Inspection and Documentation
    • Identify fiber type (usually wool on wool or wool on cotton).
    • Assess damage such as holes, moth damage, worn areas, tears, broken selvages, or fringe loss.
    • Photograph the rug before work begins and determine whether repairs should be structural, cosmetic, or both.
  2. Dusting and Washing
    • Remove embedded dust and grit.
    • Hand wash the kilim using fiber-safe detergents.
    • Dry the rug flat under controlled conditions. Repairing a dirty rug can lock debris into the weave and accelerate wear.
  3. Stabilization
    • Secure weak edges or tears to prevent additional unraveling during restoration.
    • Reinforce loose wefts or warps before reconstruction begins.
  4. Reweaving
    • Match the original wool, yarn thickness, twist, and dye colors as closely as possible.
    • Recreate the missing warp and weft structure.
    • Hand-weave replacement sections following the original weaving technique and pattern.
  5. Selvage and Edge Repair
    • Rebuild damaged side cords if needed.
    • Rewrap or reinforce the selvages to restore strength and prevent future fraying.
  6. Fringe Restoration
    • Replace or reconstruct damaged fringe if it is structurally important.
    • Secure the fringe to the rug's foundation using traditional techniques.
  7. Blocking and Reshaping
    • Square the rug if it has become distorted.
    • Adjust tension so the kilim lies flat without ripples.
  8. Final Inspection
    • Check weave consistency and structural integrity.
    • Trim any excess fibers and ensure the repaired area blends naturally with the original rug.

For valuable or antique Turkish kilims, Jafri generally aims for conservation-quality repairs, preserving as much original material as possible rather than replacing large sections unnecessarily. Color matching, yarn selection, and weave replication are key to maintaining both the rug's appearance and value.

The complexity of the repair depends on the extent of the damage. Small moth holes may take a few hours, while reconstructing large missing sections or intricate geometric motifs can require dozens of hours of hand weaving.

The first image shows the rug in very poor condition with fringe and binding work required as it was fraying. The second image shows how this Persian Shiraz rug has been restored to its original condition with fringe and binding that comports to the design and era such as adding tea stained fringe implants to the rug as that was the proper fringe that was of that circa 1900 period. Additionally Jafri Rug restoration sheared this rug to even out the wool on the pile of the rug and added binding that prevents the wool from unraveling any further into the field of the rug and  Jafri Rug restoration did the following work:

-Reweaving worn areas where warp and weft is showing

-Refringing as the fringe is torn off

-Rebinding as the binding is unraveling

-Vegetable dyes are fading

-Field of the rug is also showing unevenness in the wool
pile

Given the age and value of the rug, this is a rug that
should not be sent to any rug store, but should go to Jafri Rug restoration as
the weavers are specifically skilled to repair these threadbare rugs and
understand the motifs and match the wool dye lot for dye lot. The artistry will
maintain the antiquity of the rug and will not make it look newly made and will
also raise the value of the rug.

Jafri Rug restoration fixed the rug by doing the following:

1. Assessment and Inspection:

Condition Check: Inspect the rug thoroughly for signs of
wear, including fraying edges, missing or damaged knots, stains, or fading.
This is essential to assess the scope of restoration work needed.

Fabric Type: Identify the materials used (wool, silk, etc.)
to ensure the correct restoration techniques and materials are used.

Color Matching: Persian rugs often feature vibrant and
intricate color schemes. Color matching is important for any repairs to ensure
the restoration blends seamlessly with the original.

2. Cleaning:

Gentle Cleaning: Before restoration, the rug is cleaned to
remove dirt and stains. This is typically done by hand or machine using organic
olive oil shampoo foam to cleanse the rug and techniques that preserve the
integrity of the fibers.

Drying: After cleaning, the rug must be carefully dried to
prevent any damage or shrinkage.

3. Repairing Damaged Areas:

Reweaving/Knots: If there are missing or damaged knots, the
missing sections will be re-woven by hand. Skilled weavers use the same
knotting technique that was used in the original rug to ensure consistency.

Fringe Repair: If the fringe is damaged or missing, it can
be reattached or replaced using matching fibers.

Edge Repair: The rug’s edges may become frayed over time. A
repair may involve re-binding the edges to prevent further unraveling.

4. Color Restoration:

If the rug has areas with faded or discolored sections, dyes
matching the original colors may be applied to restore the vibrancy. This
requires careful attention to detail to blend the colors seamlessly.

Prior to sending this rug to Pakistan the weavers will do the following:

The actual process

1. Inspection and Assessment
The restoration process at Jafri Rugs begins with a thorough inspection to evaluate the extent of damage. This includes identifying areas of wear, loose or unraveling threads, faded colors, and any holes or tears. Special care is taken to preserve the rug’s original design and the integrity of its stitching.

2. Pre-Restoration Cleaning
Before restoration work begins, the rug is carefully cleaned to remove accumulated dirt, dust, and stains. This ensures the restoration is performed on a clean surface and helps uncover areas that may require additional attention during the process.

3. Reweaving Damaged Sections
If the rug has missing or damaged stitches, skilled artisans meticulously reweave the affected areas. Original patterns and colors are closely matched so the repaired sections blend seamlessly with the rest of the rug, requiring a high level of craftsmanship.

4. Fringe and Edge Repair
The fringe of a rug often experiences wear over time. Frayed or missing fringe can be repaired or replaced by hand to match the original design and materials.
Additionally, rug edges that have begun to unravel are reinforced or re-bound through careful re-stitching or the use of similar materials to secure and protect the edges.

5. Dyeing and Color Restoration
Over time, exposure to sunlight, foot traffic, or improper cleaning can cause rug colors to fade. Restoration specialists use professional, colorfast dyes to restore the rug’s original hues.
Precise color matching is essential and is typically done by hand to ensure a seamless and natural appearance.

6. Final Inspection
Once all restoration work is complete, a final inspection is performed to ensure the rug has been fully restored. The rug is examined for any overlooked areas, color inconsistencies, or stitching issues before it is returned.

A Caucausian sumac of this quality is threadbare and quite valuable. The rug in its former condition was destroyed and there were remnants of the original medallions throughout the field and borders.
