This rug requires the following work

When a Persian or Oriental rug has been exposed to flooding, rapid professional treatment is essential to prevent permanent damage from mold, mildew, dye migration, odors, and fiber deterioration. At Jafri Oriental Rugs, the flood damage cleaning and restoration process is designed to safely restore handmade rugs while preserving their craftsmanship and value.

1. Emergency Assessment

Each flood-damaged rug is carefully inspected to determine:

  • Source of the water (clean water, gray water, or contaminated floodwater)
  • Extent of water saturation
  • Fiber type (wool, silk, cotton, or synthetic)
  • Dye stability
  • Mold or mildew growth
  • Structural damage to the foundation

This evaluation helps determine the safest restoration approach.

2. Immediate Water Extraction

Standing water is removed as quickly as possible using professional extraction equipment to minimize:

  • Mold and mildew growth
  • Fiber weakening
  • Dye bleeding
  • Delamination and foundation damage

Prompt extraction is critical, especially for handmade rugs.

3. Dust and Debris Removal

Floodwater often leaves behind:

  • Mud
  • Sand
  • Silt
  • Organic debris
  • Bacteria and contaminants

The rug is thoroughly cleaned to remove these materials before the washing process begins.

4. Specialized Hand Washing

Each rug is hand washed using fiber-safe, pH-balanced cleaning solutions appropriate for Persian and Oriental rugs. Depending on the contamination level, technicians may perform multiple washes to remove:

  • Dirt and sediment
  • Flood residue
  • Bacteria
  • Odors
  • Organic contaminants

Hand washing helps protect delicate wool, silk, and natural dyes while achieving a deep clean.

5. Odor and Sanitization Treatment

Flood-damaged rugs may require specialized treatments to eliminate:

  • Musty odors
  • Mold spores
  • Mildew
  • Bacterial contamination

Professional deodorizing and sanitizing treatments help restore freshness without damaging delicate fibers.

6. Controlled Drying

After washing:

  • Excess water is extracted.
  • Rugs are dried in a climate-controlled environment with proper airflow and humidity control.
  • Moisture levels are monitored throughout the drying process.

Controlled drying helps prevent:

  • Mold growth
  • Shrinkage
  • Dye migration
  • Fiber distortion

7. Restoration and Repairs

If flooding has caused structural damage, restoration may include:

  • Fringe repair or replacement
  • Edge binding repair
  • Reweaving damaged areas
  • Foundation stabilization
  • Color correction where possible

These repairs help restore both the appearance and integrity of the rug.

8. Final Inspection

Before the rug is returned, technicians perform a comprehensive quality inspection to verify:

  • Complete cleaning
  • Odor removal
  • Proper drying
  • Structural stability
  • Color consistency
  • Overall restoration quality

Why Immediate Action Matters

Flood damage can permanently affect a handmade rug if left untreated. Prompt professional cleaning can:

  • Reduce the risk of mold and mildew.
  • Prevent permanent staining and dye bleeding.
  • Remove contaminants and odors.
  • Preserve the rug's structure and appearance.
  • Extend the life of valuable Persian and Oriental rugs.

For the best chance of successful restoration, flood-damaged rugs should be professionally cleaned and dried as soon as possible after water exposure.

Jafri Rugs restoration will do the following: 1. Assessment and Inspection: Condition Check: Inspect the rug thoroughly for signs of wear, including fraying edges, missing or damaged knots, stains, or fading. This is essential to assess the scope of restoration work needed. Fabric Type: Identify the materials used (wool, silk, etc.) to ensure the correct restoration techniques and materials are used. Color Matching: Persian rugs often feature vibrant and intricate color schemes. Color matching is important for any repairs to ensure the restoration blends seamlessly with the original. 2. Cleaning: Gentle Cleaning: Before restoration, the rug is cleaned to remove dirt and stains. This is typically done by hand or machine using organic olive oil shampoo foam to cleanse the rug and techniques that preserve the integrity of the fibers. Drying: After cleaning, the rug must be carefully dried to prevent any damage or shrinkage. 3. Repairing Damaged Areas: Reweaving/Knots: If there are missing or damaged knots, the missing sections will be re-woven by hand. Skilled weavers use the same knotting technique that was used in the original rug to ensure consistency. Fringe Repair: If the fringe is damaged or missing, it can be reattached or replaced using matching fibers. Edge Repair: The rug’s edges may become frayed over time. A repair may involve re-binding the edges to prevent further unraveling. 4. Color Restoration: If the rug has areas with faded or discolored sections, dyes matching the original colors may be applied to restore the vibrancy. This requires careful attention to detail to blend the colors seamlessly.

The second image shows the post-restoration work

The Jafri Oriental Rugs Reweaving Process is a meticulous restoration technique used to repair handmade Persian, Oriental, antique, wool, and silk rugs that have suffered damage from wear, holes, tears, moths, or fire. The goal is to restore the rug while preserving its original design, structure, and value.

1. Comprehensive Inspection

Every rug begins with a detailed assessment where technicians examine:

  • Hole and tear locations
  • Missing pile or knots
  • Loose or unraveling edges
  • Fiber type (wool, silk, or cotton)
  • Knot style and density
  • Dye colors and overall condition

This inspection determines the best restoration method while protecting the rug's authenticity.

2. Professional Cleaning

Before reweaving begins, the rug is thoroughly hand washed to remove dirt, dust, and oils that can interfere with repairs. Cleaning also reveals hidden damage that may require restoration.

3. Foundation Reconstruction

If the rug's foundation has been damaged:

  • Broken warp threads are replaced.
  • Missing weft threads are reconstructed.
  • The rug's structural integrity is restored before any decorative work begins.

This step provides the framework needed for long-lasting repairs.

4. Hand Reweaving

Experienced artisans carefully recreate the damaged area by:

  • Matching the original knot type (Persian or Turkish)
  • Matching knot density
  • Using wool or silk that closely matches the original fibers
  • Reproducing intricate borders, floral motifs, medallions, and other patterns knot by knot

The objective is to make the repair blend as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding design.

5. Color Matching and Restoration

When necessary, restoration specialists:

  • Match original vegetable or chrome dye colors
  • Hand-dye replacement fibers when required
  • Blend repaired areas with the existing rug to maintain a consistent appearance

Color restoration is performed carefully to preserve the rug's original character while minimizing visible repairs.

6. Fringe and Edge Restoration

If damage extends to the rug's ends:

  • Missing or worn fringe is repaired or replaced.
  • Side bindings are reinforced or rebuilt.
  • Rug edges are secured to prevent future unraveling.

These repairs improve both the rug's appearance and its structural stability.

7. Shearing and Grooming

Once reweaving is complete:

  • The repaired pile is trimmed to match the surrounding height.
  • Fibers are brushed in the natural pile direction.
  • The repaired area is blended for a consistent texture and finish.

8. Final Inspection

Before returning the rug, technicians verify:

  • Accurate pattern reproduction
  • Secure knots and foundation
  • Proper color matching
  • Smooth, even pile height
  • Overall craftsmanship and structural integrity

The finished rug is carefully inspected to ensure the restoration meets professional quality standards.

Reweaving is one of the most specialized forms of rug restoration. By rebuilding damaged areas knot by knot using matching materials and traditional weaving techniques, Jafri Oriental Rugs aims to preserve the beauty, durability, and value of handmade Persian and Oriental rugs while extending their usable life.

Jafri Rugs' specialized Needlepoint Wash was essential for proper cleaning. Given the delicate nature of needlepoint rugs, a standard cleaning would have been catastrophic, potentially damaging the intricate stitching and causing the colors to fade. The needlepoint wash was urgently needed to gently lift dirt and stains without compromising the integrity of the craftsmanship. The urgency of this process can't be overstated. Without immediate restoration, the rug would have faced irreversible damage. Thanks to the expert care at Jafri Rugs, both the new backing and specialized cleaning were completed, ensuring the rug's survival and preservation for many years to come.

A Caucausian sumac of this quality is threadbare and quite valuable. The rug in its former condition was destroyed and there were remnants of the original medallions throughout the field and borders. This rug was from the 1800's and is over 200 years old. The fringe and binding was tearing apart and the field was also worn.

The first image shows the rug in very poor condition with fringe and binding work required as it was fraying. The second image shows how this Persian Sumac rug has been restored to its original condition with fringe and binding that comports to the design and era such as adding tea stained fringe implants to the rug as that was the proper fringe that was of that 19th century period. Additionally Jafri Rug restoration sheared this rug to even out the wool on the pile of the rug and added binding that prevents the wool from unraveling any further into the field of the rug and Jafri Rug restoration did the following work:

-Reweaving worn areas where warp and weft is showing

-Refringing as the fringe is torn off

-Rebinding as the binding is unraveling

-Vegetable dyes are fading

-Field of the rug is also showing unevenness in the wool pile

Given the age and value of the rug, this is a rug that should not be sent to any rug store, but should go to Jafri Rug restoration as the weavers are specifically skilled to repair these threadbare rugs and understand the motifs and match the wool dye lot for dye lot. The artistry will maintain the antiquity of the rug and will not make it look newly made and will also raise the value of the rug.

Jafri Rug restoration fixed the rug by doing the following:

1. Assessment and Inspection:

Condition Check: Inspect the rug thoroughly for signs of wear, including fraying edges, missing or damaged knots, stains, or fading.

2. Cleaning:

Gentle Cleaning: Before restoration, the rug is cleaned to remove dirt and stains. This is typically done by hand or machine using organic olive oil shampoo foam to cleanse the rug and techniques that preserve the integrity of the fibers.

Drying: After cleaning, the rug must be carefully dried to prevent any damage or shrinkage.

3. Repairing Damaged Areas:

Reweaving/Knots: If there are missing or damaged knots, the missing sections will be re-woven by hand.

4. Color Restoration:

If the rug has areas with faded or discolored sections, dyes matching the original colors may be applied to restore the vibrancy. This requires careful attention to detail to blend the colors seamlessly.
