Persian rugs are handcrafted works of art that require specialized cleaning and repair. Their wool or silk fibers, intricate patterns, natural and synthetic dyes, hand-knotted construction, and varying ages all require careful consideration when professional cleaning or restoration is needed.
At Jafri Rugs, we provide professional Persian rug cleaning, repair, and restoration for homeowners and businesses throughout Albany, the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, and Upstate New York. Each Persian rug is individually evaluated so the cleaning and repair process can be tailored to its fiber, construction, dyes, age, and condition.
Persian rugs can accumulate years of dust, dirt, stains, pet odors, and other contaminants. Regular vacuuming removes surface debris but may not eliminate deeply embedded soil.
Jafri's Persian rug cleaning services are designed for handmade and specialty rugs and may include:
Cleaning methods are customized according to the rug's individual characteristics rather than treating every rug the same way.
Persian rugs can be woven from different materials, including wool and silk. These fibers can respond differently to moisture, cleaning solutions, agitation, and drying.
Before cleaning, Jafri Rugs evaluates the rug's fiber, weave, dyes, age, and overall condition. This allows the cleaning process to be selected according to the needs of the individual rug.
Jafri Rugs specializes in cleaning hand-knotted wool, silk, antique, semi-antique, and other fine rugs.
Food and beverage spills, pet accidents, dirt, and everyday household use can leave difficult stains on Persian rugs.
Professional stain removal begins with identifying the affected area and evaluating the rug's fibers and dyes. Appropriate treatment can then be selected to address the stain while taking the rug's construction and condition into consideration.
Pet urine and other accidents can penetrate deeply into rug fibers. Simply cleaning the surface may not address the underlying contamination or odor.
Jafri Rugs provides professional pet stain and odor treatment as part of its rug cleaning services. The rug can be evaluated to determine the appropriate cleaning and deodorizing approach.
Persian rugs can develop damage from years of foot traffic, furniture, pets, moths, water, improper storage, or normal aging.
Jafri Rugs provides professional Persian rug repair and restoration services, including:
The appropriate restoration technique depends on the type and extent of damage and the construction of the individual rug. Jafri's current Albany service page specifically lists fringe repair, backing repair, dye and color correction, and patching among its repair services.
When a Persian rug has holes, tears, missing pile, or damaged woven sections, reweaving may be necessary.
Reweaving involves carefully reconstructing damaged areas so they integrate with the existing rug. The repair process can take into account the original fibers, colors, knotting, weave, and pattern.
For antique and heavily worn Persian rugs, professional reweaving can help stabilize damaged sections and address structural problems before they become more extensive.
Fringe is part of the foundation of many Persian rugs and can become worn, detached, or damaged over time.
Jafri Rugs provides fringe repair and replacement services as part of its rug restoration work. When necessary, the underlying foundation and edges can also be evaluated to determine whether additional structural repair is needed.
The edges of a Persian rug experience significant wear from everyday use. Over time, binding can loosen, unravel, or become damaged.
Professional edge and binding repair can reinforce vulnerable areas and help prevent additional unraveling. Repair techniques are selected according to the rug's construction and existing condition.
Moth damage can create holes, missing pile, weakened foundations, and damaged patterns in Persian rugs.
Jafri Rugs evaluates moth-damaged rugs to determine the extent of the damage and whether treatment, reweaving, foundation repair, or other restoration work is necessary.
For extensive damage, restoration may involve rebuilding affected sections while matching the surrounding rug as closely as practical.
Water and flood damage can create serious problems for Persian rugs, including staining, dye migration, odors, weakened foundations, and fiber deterioration.
If a Persian rug has been exposed to water, professional evaluation should be performed as soon as possible. Jafri Rugs can inspect the rug and determine whether specialized cleaning, drying, repair, or restoration is required.
Every Persian rug is inspected before cleaning. The team evaluates the fiber, weave, dyes, age, stains, wear, fringe, and structural condition.
Dry soil and embedded debris are removed before washing. This prepares the rug for the deeper cleaning process.
The rug is cleaned using methods appropriate for its individual construction, fibers, dyes, and condition.
The rug is thoroughly rinsed to remove loosened soil and remaining cleaning solution.
After cleaning, the rug is carefully dried under controlled conditions to help maintain its shape and condition.
The rug is groomed as appropriate and receives a final inspection. Any areas requiring additional attention can then be evaluated.
Jafri's published cleaning information emphasizes customized cleaning methods for different rug fibers and constructions.
Jafri Rugs has been providing rug sales, cleaning, repair, and restoration services since 1979. Its Albany operation specializes in Oriental and fine rugs, including handmade wool and silk rugs, antiques, and semi-antiques.
Jafri provides a complete approach to Persian rug care, including:
This allows Persian rug owners to have both cleaning and restoration needs evaluated through the same specialty rug-care business.

For this rug Jafri Rugs will do the following:
The Jafri Oriental Rugs Cleaning, Fringe implant and binding process is a meticulous restoration technique used to repair handmade Persian, Oriental, antique, wool, and silk rugs that have suffered damage from wear, holes, tears, moths, or fire. The goal is to restore the rug while preserving its original design, structure, and value.
Every rug begins with a detailed assessment where technicians examine:
This inspection determines the best restoration method while protecting the rug's authenticity.
Before reweaving begins, the rug is thoroughly hand washed to remove dirt, dust, and oils that can interfere with repairs. Cleaning also reveals hidden damage that may require restoration.
If the rug's foundation has been damaged:
This step provides the framework needed for long-lasting repairs.
Experienced artisans carefully recreate the damaged area by:
The objective is to make the repair blend as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding design.
When necessary, restoration specialists:
Color restoration is performed carefully to preserve the rug's original character while minimizing visible repairs.
If damage extends to the rug's ends:
These repairs improve both the rug's appearance and its structural stability.
Once reweaving is complete:
Before returning the rug, technicians verify:
The finished rug is carefully inspected to ensure the restoration meets professional quality standards.
Reweaving is one of the most specialized forms of rug restoration. By rebuilding damaged areas knot by knot using matching materials and traditional weaving techniques, Jafri Oriental Rugs aims to preserve the beauty, durability, and value of handmade Persian and Oriental rugs while extending their usable life.

Repairing a woven Moroccan kilim requires preserving the original weave, colors, and structure. The exact process varies depending on the damage, Jafri's restoration typically follows these steps:
For valuable or antique kilims, Jafri generally aims for conservation-quality repairs, preserving as much original material as possible rather than replacing large sections unnecessarily. Color matching, yarn selection, and weave replication are key to maintaining both the rug's appearance and value.
The complexity of the repair depends on the extent of the damage. Small moth holes may take a few hours, while reconstructing large missing sections or intricate geometric motifs can require dozens of hours of hand weaving.

A Persian Sarouk of this quality is a rug that is no longer produced on any loom across the world.
The rug was made in the 1920s and has all the characteristics of an antique Persian rug starting with its non-programmed size and is made with vegetable dyes
Additionally, it is threadbare and is tightly knotted
HOWEVER, the rug has the following issues:
-Moth damage in the field that ate thru the motifs which requires reweaving and color restoration
-Fringe destroyed which requires fringe implant
-Faded vegetable dyes which requires brushing the rug with oil and vegetable dye to bring back the original color of the rug
Jafri Rug restoration fixed this rug entirely and raised the value of the rug by doing the following:
1.Inspection and Identification: Jafri Rugs carefully inspected to assess the extent of the moth damage. This involves checking the front and back of the rug for signs of infestation.
· Moth Treatment: The rug would be treated to eliminate any remaining moths and eggs. This usually involves a deep fumigation process using eco-friendly chemicals or freezing the rug to kill any pests.
· Re-weaving or Repairing Damaged Areas: The affected areas would likely require Jafri’s weavers reweaving the entire field. The damaged wool would be carefully removed, and new wool fibers, typically dyed to match the original, would be woven into the affected areas to restore the rug's appearance.
2. Worn and Faded Areas of the rug
As an example the medallion is a central feature in Persian rugs, and significant wear or fading can take away from the rug’s beauty and value.
· Color Restoration: To restore the faded vegetable and chrome dyes, Jafri’s first class weavers dyeing techniques may be employed. This could involve carefully re-dyeing the area using natural dyes or color-safe synthetic dyes. This process is done with precision to match the original hues and avoid dye bleeding.
· Reweaving/Restoration: If the medallion’s pattern is worn down to the point of damage, Jafri’s weavers had to reweave the intricate design. This involves painstakingly replicating the original design and colors.
3. Fringe and Binding Unraveling
The fringe and the binding are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic of the rug.
· Fringe Repair or Replacement: The unraveling fringe would need to be reattached or replaced, depending on the extent of the damage. Jafri’s weavers often restore the fringe by knotting it back into place using similar fibers (wool or silk, depending on the rug’s original material). If the fringe is too damaged, it might need to be completely replaced.
· Binding Reinforcement: The edges and binding would also be repaired. This could involve stitching new binding material (usually wool or cotton) onto the rug’s edges, followed by a careful reinforcement of the stitching to prevent further unraveling. A careful color match is essential to keep the aesthetic intact.
4. Wool Pilling
Pilling happens when fibers get tangled and form small balls of fuzz, which can occur naturally over time with wool rugs.
· Shaving the Rug: Pilling can be removed through a careful process of shaving. Special tools or razors designed for rugs are used to gently remove the pill without damaging the fibers underneath. The professional would carefully go over the rug to ensure the pilling is removed evenly, leaving the wool in good condition.
· Deep Cleaning: After shaving off the pilling, the rug would undergo a deep cleaning to remove any remaining loose fibers and dirt. This would also help restore the softness of the wool.

The first image shows how this circa 1900 hand knotted Kerman rug has been left in a very poor condition. This rug requires enormous attention to the following areas:
-Reweaving worn areas where warp and weft is showing
-Refringing as the fringe is torn off
-Rebinding as the binding is unraveling
-Vegetable dyes are fading
-Field of the rug is also showing unevenness in the wool pile
-Stains due to water damage and wool that is destroyed
Jafri Rugs did not perform any repair work on this rug, the second image shows cleaning and color restoration work

I bless the day I found Mr Jafri. As one who has collected rugs for 50 years, I both learned about their value and origins and had them beautifully cleaned and repaired.
Very beautiful rugs there, would have been a difficult decision. Only needed a rug pad this time. When we're in the market again, this is where we'll go. Pete, Delmar, NY
