Flood Damage Rug Cleaning & Restoration

Professional Flood Damage Cleaning for Persian & Oriental Rugs

Has your Persian or Oriental rug been damaged by flooding, a burst pipe, a plumbing leak, or water intrusion? Jafri Oriental Rugs specializes in flood damage rug cleaning and restoration for handmade Persian, Oriental, antique, wool, and silk rugs. Our experienced craftsmen use traditional hand-washing techniques and advanced restoration methods to safely remove contaminants, eliminate odors, and restore your rug's beauty and structural integrity.

The sooner a flood-damaged rug receives professional attention, the greater the chance of preventing permanent damage such as mold, mildew, dye bleeding, fiber deterioration, and foundation failure.

Our Flood Damage Rug Restoration Process

Comprehensive Rug Inspection

Every restoration begins with a detailed inspection. Our specialists evaluate the rug's fibers, construction, dye stability, water exposure, contamination level, and overall condition to develop a customized cleaning and restoration plan.

Professional Water Extraction

Prompt water removal is essential to minimize long-term damage. We use professional extraction equipment to remove excess moisture before it can weaken fibers, promote mold growth, or cause dyes to migrate.

Removal of Mud, Dirt & Contaminants

Floodwater often leaves behind mud, sand, silt, bacteria, and other contaminants deep within the rug's foundation. We carefully remove these materials before washing to ensure a more thorough and effective cleaning.

Traditional Hand Washing

Unlike standard carpet cleaning methods, every handmade rug is individually hand washed using gentle, wool-safe, pH-balanced cleaning solutions. This process safely removes dirt, flood residue, odors, and contaminants while protecting delicate fibers and preserving natural dyes.

Odor Removal & Sanitization

Flood-damaged rugs often develop unpleasant odors and may contain bacteria, mold spores, and mildew. Our specialized deodorizing and sanitizing treatments help eliminate contaminants and restore freshness without compromising the rug's delicate materials.

Climate-Controlled Drying

After cleaning, rugs are dried in a controlled environment with carefully monitored airflow, temperature, and humidity. Proper drying helps prevent shrinkage, mildew, dye bleeding, and structural distortion while protecting the rug's long-term condition.

Expert Rug Repair & Restoration

If flood damage has weakened your rug, our restoration specialists can perform a wide range of repairs, including:

  • Hand reweaving damaged areas
  • Fringe repair and replacement
  • Edge binding restoration
  • Foundation stabilization
  • Color correction and restoration
  • Structural reinforcement

Every repair is completed using traditional techniques designed to preserve the rug's original craftsmanship and appearance.

Final Quality Inspection

Before your rug is returned, it undergoes a comprehensive quality inspection. We verify that it has been thoroughly cleaned, completely dried, structurally sound, odor-free, and restored to our exacting standards.

February 25, 2026 | Hagaman, NY

Picture 2 shows the post-restoration work

Jafri Rugs fixed this rug by doing the following:

Pre-Repair Cleaning

  • A deep
    cleaning
is performed before repairs to remove dirt, oils, and debris
    that interfere with repair work.

  • Includes:

    • Dusting
      (front and back)

    • Gentle
hand washing with pH-neutral detergents so as not to erode the fibers of
      the rug

    • Rinsing
and drying in a temperature-controlled environment

Structural Repairs

These are the most critical to maintain rug integrity:

a. Edge Repair (Overcasting or Binding)

  • Rewrap
or rebind fraying edges to prevent unraveling.

  • Uses
    matching wool or cotton thread.

  • Restores
tension and keeps the weft and warp from separating.

b. Fringe Repair or Replacement

  • Stabilizes
or reconstructs the fringe (often the warp threads).

  • May
    involve:

    • Tying
      off loose fringe

    • Sewing
      in new fringe sections

    • Weaving
      new fringes into the foundation

c. Hole or Tear Repair

  • Small
    holes
: patched and reinforced from the back.

  • Larger
    holes or tears
: require reweaving the foundation (warp and weft), then
tying new knots to match the original pattern.

4. Pile Reweaving / Pattern Reconstruction

  • Rebuilds
worn or missing areas by hand-knotting new wool or silk into the
    structure.

  • Requires:

    • Color-matching
      wool (often hand-dyed)

    • Matching
the knot density, knot type (Turkish or Persian), and pattern

  • Done
by experienced weavers to ensure seamless blending with the original
    design.

5. Color Restoration

  • In
areas where colors have faded or bled, restorers may:

    • Touch
up color with textile-safe dyes where there is already wool shown in the
pile but requires blending of color for consistency in the rug’s colors

    • Avoid
painting, which can damage fibers over time

 6. Shearing &
Grooming

  • After
repairs, the pile is carefully sheared to match surrounding areas.

  • Helps
ensure a consistent pile height and finish.

  • Brushing
aligns the nap and improves visual consistency.

 7. Blocking &
Reshaping

  • If the
    rug is warped or misshapen:

    • It’s
dampened and laid flat under weight or pinned.

    • Dried
under tension to restore its original shape and prevent buckling.

8. Final Cleaning & Inspection

  • A
final surface clean removes any dust or fibers from the repair.

  • Inspection
    ensures:

    • Seamless
      repairs

    • Color
      and texture matches

    • Edges
are secure and the rug lies flat

• Initial Inspection • The cleaning process begins with a thorough inspection of the rug. Jafri Rugs assesses its material, condition, and any stains or areas of damage. This helps determine the appropriate cleaning method and whether any repairs are needed. • Dusting and Vacuuming • Pre-Cleaning Dusting: Before washing the rug, Jafri Rugs dusting will loosen and remove embedded dirt and dust from deep within the fibers. This step is crucial for preserving the structure of the rug and preventing dirt from turning into abrasive particles during cleaning. • Vacuuming: The rug is vacuumed to remove surface dirt and debris. This step helps ensure that the rug is ready for the next phase of cleaning. • Pre-Treatment of Stains and Spots • Jafri Rugs will apply specialized treatments to any visible stains or heavily soiled areas. These treatments are designed to break down the stain without damaging the rug fibers. For delicate rugs, a stain-removal solution will be chosen based on the specific material and stain type. • Washing or Deep Cleaning • Hand Washing: For high-end rugs or those with fragile fibers, we may choose to wash the rug by hand using cool water and a mild olive oil soap detergent. This method is especially common for wool, silk, and other delicate materials. • Machine Cleaning: Some synthetic rugs may be cleaned with specialized machines that use gentle agitation to remove dirt and stains. • Rinsing • After the washing process, the rug is thoroughly rinsed to remove any detergent or cleaning solutions. This step is critical to avoid leaving any residues that could attract dirt or cause deterioration over time. • Drying • Air Drying: Once cleaned, the rug must be dried properly to prevent mold, mildew, or warping. This is done in a controlled environment, often using specialized equipment that ensures even drying. Rugs are usually laid flat or hung in a climate-controlled area. • Avoiding Direct Sunlight: To prevent color fading, rugs are generally not placed directly in the sun during the drying process. • Post-Cleaning Treatment • After the rug has dried, it may undergo a final treatment, such as brushing or combing the fibers to restore its texture. Some rugs may also receive a protective treatment to help resist dirt, stains, or future damage. • Final Inspection and Return • Once the cleaning and drying processes are complete, the rug is thoroughly inspected to ensure it meets the desired cleanliness standards. Any final adjustments are made before the rug is returned to its owner.

Inspection and Assessment • The first step in restoration is a detailed inspection to assess the extent of the damage. This includes evaluating areas of wear, unraveling threads, fading colors, and any holes or tears in the rug. Special attention is given to preserving the original design and integrity of the stitching. 2. Cleaning Before Restoration • Before any restoration work begins, the rug must be cleaned thoroughly. Cleaning ensures that any accumulated dirt or stains are removed so that the restoration work can be done on a clean surface. This also helps identify areas that may require special attention during the restoration process. 3. Reweaving or Patching Damaged Sections • Reweaving: If the rug has areas of missing or damaged stitches, skilled artisans can reweave the missing sections, matching the original patterns and colors as closely as possible. This requires a high level of expertise to ensure the new stitches blend seamlessly with the rest of the rug. • Patching: In cases of extensive damage, a patch may be applied to restore the rug. This patch is typically made from the same or similar material to the original rug and is carefully stitched into place. Patches are often used when reweaving would be too complex or when a larger section of the rug has been compromised. 4. Fringe and Edge Repair • The fringe of a needlepoint rug is often subjected to wear over time. If the fringe is frayed or missing, it can be reattached or replaced by hand, ensuring that it matches the original design and material. • The edges of the rug may also need reinforcing or re-binding if they have started to unravel. This can be done by re-stitching or using a similar material to secure the edges.

This rug was a museum quality rug brought into Jafri Rug's for restoration work. Given the age of the rug our weavers had to make sure the rug was thoroughly organically cleaned to not make the rug brittle or too course when threading the needle for reweaving otherwise the rug would snap. This rug went thru flood damage and prior to repairing it Jafri Rug restoration cleaned it first.

Persian and Caucasian rug cleaning is an art. The rug in this picture is centuries old and is a threadbare rug. Cleaning aCaucasian antique rug(such as those from the Kazak, Shirvan, or Karabagh regions) requires special care due to their age, natural dyes, and delicate wool. Jafri Rug restoration's step-by-step cleaning process restores and preserves the rug's integrity while removing dirt and grime

The first image shows the rug in completely worn condition where the field of the rug requires reweaving and color restoration

The second image shows the rug completely repaired and the value of the rug has now increased significantly as the antiquity of the rug has been maintained.
