1. Inspection & Evaluation

We examine the Kilim's weave, fibers, dyes, edges, fringe, and foundation. Existing damage is identified before cleaning so vulnerable areas can be properly protected.

2. Deep Dust & Soil Removal

Embedded dirt and grit are carefully removed before washing. Removing abrasive particles helps protect the woven fibers from unnecessary wear.

3. Specialized Cleaning

Kilim rugs are cleaned according to their individual construction and materials. Special consideration is given to wool, cotton, vegetable dyes, antique textiles, and delicate woven structures.

4. Stain & Odor Treatment

Stains, pet odors, and other contaminants can receive specialized treatment appropriate for the rug's fibers and dyes.

5. Controlled Drying

After cleaning and rinsing, the Kilim is carefully dried under controlled conditions. Proper drying helps reduce the risk of moisture-related problems, shrinkage, distortion, and fiber damage.

6. Final Inspection

After cleaning, the rug is inspected again to identify any additional restoration needs and ensure that the cleaning process has been completed properly.

Kilim Rug Repair & Restoration

Kilim rugs can develop holes, tears, worn sections, broken warp and weft threads, damaged selvages, and missing fringe as they age.

Jafri Rugs provides specialized Kilim rug repair and restoration, including:

  • Kilim reweaving
  • Hole and tear repair
  • Warp and weft repair
  • Edge and selvage repair
  • Fringe repair and replacement
  • Moth damage restoration
  • Worn-area reconstruction
  • Color restoration
  • Structural stabilization
  • Blocking and reshaping

Kilim Rug Reweaving

Because a Kilim is a flat weave, repairing significant damage requires recreating its original warp and weft structure rather than simply placing a patch over the damaged area.

Jafri's restoration process can involve stabilizing the existing warp threads, matching replacement yarn by fiber, thickness, and color, and hand-weaving new sections to follow the original design.

The goal is to create a durable restoration that blends naturally with the original weaving while preserving the rug's character and craftsmanship.

Kilim Fringe & Edge Repair

The edges and fringe of a Kilim can be particularly vulnerable to wear. Loose or damaged edges can allow the weave to unravel and may eventually compromise the rug's foundation.

Our Kilim fringe repair and edge restoration services can stabilize damaged areas and, when necessary, reconstruct or replace missing fringe using appropriate materials and traditional techniques.

Antique & Vintage Kilim Restoration

Antique and vintage Kilims require careful handling because years of use may weaken their fibers, foundation, and dyes.

Jafri Rugs evaluates older Kilims individually and can combine professional cleaning with hand restoration, reweaving, fringe repair, and color restoration when appropriate.

For valuable or sentimental Kilims, restoration can help preserve both the rug's appearance and its structural integrity.

The rug requires artisan work

The rug is valuable and any work will increase the value of the rug

April 27, 2026 | Stuyvesant Falls, NY

Jafri Rug restoration has finished cleaning this rug and will now fix this rug entirely and raise the value of the rug by doing the following:

1.Inspection and Identification: Jafri Rugs carefully inspected to assess the extent of the moth damage. This involves checking the front and back of the rug for signs of infestation.

·        Moth Treatment: The rug would be treated to eliminate any remaining moths and eggs. This usually involves a deep fumigation process using eco-friendly chemicals or freezing the rug to kill any pests.

·        Re-weaving or Repairing Damaged Areas: The affected areas would likely require Jafri’s weavers reweaving the entire field. The damaged wool would be carefully removed, and new wool fibers, typically dyed to match the original, would be woven into the affected areas to restore the rug's appearance.

2. Worn and Faded Areas of the rug

As an example the medallion is a central feature in Persian rugs, and significant wear or fading can take away from the rug’s beauty and value.

·        Color Restoration: To restore the faded vegetable and chrome dyes, Jafri’s first class weavers dyeing techniques may be employed. This could involve carefully re-dyeing the  area using natural dyes or color-safe synthetic dyes. This process is done with precision to match the original hues and avoid dye bleeding.

·        Reweaving/Restoration: If the medallion’s pattern is worn down to the point of damage, Jafri’s weavers had to reweave the intricate design. This involves painstakingly replicating the original design and colors.

3. Fringe and Binding Unraveling

The fringe and the binding are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic of the rug.

·        Fringe Repair or Replacement: The unraveling fringe would need to be reattached or replaced, depending on the extent of the damage. Jafri’s weavers often restore the fringe by knotting it back into place using similar fibers (wool or silk, depending on the rug’s original material). If the fringe is too damaged, it might need to be completely replaced.

·        Binding Reinforcement: The edges and binding would also be repaired. This could involve stitching new binding material (usually wool or cotton) onto the rug’s edges, followed by a careful reinforcement of the stitching to prevent further unraveling. A careful color match is essential to keep the aesthetic intact.

4. Wool Pilling

Pilling happens when fibers get tangled and form small balls of fuzz, which can occur naturally over time with wool rugs.

·        Shaving the Rug: Pilling can be removed through a careful process of shaving. Special tools or razors designed for rugs are used to gently remove the pill without damaging the fibers underneath. The professional would carefully go over the rug to ensure the pilling is removed evenly, leaving the wool in good condition.

·        Deep Cleaning: After shaving off the pilling, the rug would undergo a deep cleaning to remove any remaining loose fibers and dirt. This would also help restore the softness of the wool.

This was a 6 month project that required enormous work. The rug is a classic antique Persian Kerman no longer able to be produced on the loom. The rug was very heavily destroyed by the following: -Water damage -Moth larvae which ate thru the wool in various sections of the rugs -Color run/color bleeding caused by the water damage -Faded vegetable dyes requiring color restoration The final image of the rug shows the final completed restoration work of the rug Jafri Rugs restored the rug by doing the following: Complete reweaving of the moth destroyed floral motifs Cleaning of the rug which went thru Jafri Rug's organic wash As ivory can bleed easily we did color restoration which is a technique that brings back the original dye lot of the rug

April 03, 2025 | Ravena, NY

This is an example of a classic Persian Sarouk that was in need of not only cleaning and repair but also shearing The purpose of shearing/shaving the pile of a rug is that over time if a rug is left outside or has accumulated dirt, dust, ash, water damage, the particles form a crust on the top of the pile of the rug. For this Jafri Rug restoration did the following: -Antique cleaning where the rug is soaked heavily for days in a tub of hot water -The rug is then brought to a dry room -The rug is then dusted -The rug is then applied with an olive oil foam rather than harsh chemicals which can cause color run/color bleeding Following cleaning the rug is then sheared with a machine and then clipped by hand which allows for the rug's original vegetable dyes to show The rug was newly made, however the first pic details what can happen in a period of time where the rug is not cared for Pic two shows the post cleaning and shearing process, where the royal navy comes out and the rose on the borders pops as well For more questions on this visit us at jafrirugcleaning.com or click the link below for more of our work.
