This is an example of a Navajo kilim made in the Southwest
Restoring
a woven kilim rug is a delicate process that requires understanding the
rug’s structure, materials, and traditional weaving techniques. Kilims are flat-weave
rugs, typically made from wool (and sometimes cotton), and have no pile.
Restoration focuses on preserving the rug's authenticity while repairing damage
such as holes, frayed edges, or faded colors.
The first picture shows the following issues with the rug:
-All four corners of the rug are coiled and require stretching/blocking to make sure the rug lays flat
Jafri Rug restoration will do the following:
The rug stretching & blocking process is a professional corrective procedure used to restore a handmade rug’s shape, dimensions, and structural alignment after it has become wavy, rippled, skewed, or curled. It is common with Persian, Oriental, and other hand-knotted rugs.
Rug is measured corner-to-corner
Warp (length) and weft (width) tension is evaluated
Distortion patterns are identified
Rug is lightly dampened with clean, temperature-controlled water
Never soaked at this stage
Moisture relaxes wool, cotton, or silk fibers
Rug is placed on a blocking table or frame
Pattern lines are used to visually realign the rug
Corners are squared and edges straightened
Tension is applied slowly and evenly
Stretched in the direction needed (warp, weft, or both)
Overstretching is avoided to prevent fiber fatigue
This step may take hours, not minutes.
Adjustable clamps to hold the rug together
Stainless steel pins
Blocking bars
Edges are secured without piercing pile or damaging foundation.
Rug dries completely flat
Controlled airflow and temperature
No heat, no hanging
Drying can take 24–72 hours, depending on rug thickness and humidity.
Measurements rechecked
Minor adjustments if needed
Edges and corners reinforced if necessary

I bless the day I found Mr Jafri. As one who has collected rugs for 50 years, I both learned about their value and origins and had them beautifully cleaned and repaired.
Very beautiful rugs there, would have been a difficult decision. Only needed a rug pad this time. When we're in the market again, this is where we'll go. Pete, Delmar, NY
