Job completed for Woven Kilim Rug Cleaning and Repair

Completion date: December 31, 2025

Location: Surprise, NY

Why did the customer contact us?

This is an example of a kilim that was torn apart. Jafri Rugs will have to do the following:

-Reweave the torn areas so that they will form the larger Kilim rug

-Clean the kilim so that there are no longer any dust particles or dirt in the rugs

-Do fringe implants so the rug has fringe available on the frame of the rug

-The edging is coming off and unraveling into the field, requiring adding new binding to the rug

Solutions provided:

Jafri Rug restoration will fix this rug entirely and raise the value of the rug by doing the following:

1. Inspection and Identification:
Jafri Rugs carefully inspect the rug to assess the extent of moth damage. This involves checking the front and back of the rug for signs of infestation.

  • Moth Treatment:
The rug is treated to eliminate any remaining moths and eggs. This usually involves a deep fumigation process using eco-friendly chemicals or freezing the rug to kill pests.

  • Re-weaving or Repairing Damaged Areas:
The affected areas may require reweaving. Damaged wool is carefully removed and replaced with new wool fibers dyed to match the original, restoring the rug’s appearance.

2. Worn and Faded Areas of the Rug

As an example, the medallion is a central feature in Persian rugs, and significant wear or fading can take away from the rug’s beauty and value.

  • Color Restoration:
To restore faded vegetable and chrome dyes, expert dyeing techniques may be used. This involves carefully re-dyeing the area with precision to match original hues and avoid dye bleeding.

  • Reweaving / Restoration:
If the medallion’s pattern is worn down, skilled weavers reweave the intricate design, replicating the original pattern and colors.

3. Fringe and Binding Unraveling

The fringe and binding are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and appearance of the rug.

  • Fringe Repair or Replacement:
Unraveling fringe is reattached or replaced depending on the damage. Weavers restore fringe by knotting it back into place using matching fibers.

  • Binding Reinforcement:
The rug’s edges are repaired by stitching new binding material and reinforcing the stitching to prevent further unraveling, with careful color matching.

4. Wool Pilling

Pilling occurs when fibers tangle and form small balls of fuzz, which is common with wool rugs over time.

  • Shaving the Rug:
Pilling is removed using specialized shaving tools that gently remove pills without damaging underlying fibers.

  • Deep Cleaning:
After shaving, the rug undergoes deep cleaning to remove loose fibers and restore softness.

Additional Steps in the Restoration Process:

  • Deep Cleaning:
Once repairs are complete, the rug is carefully cleaned using wool-safe techniques, often involving hand washing, rinsing, and controlled drying.

  • Final Inspection:
The rug undergoes a final inspection to ensure all damage, wear, and pilling have been properly addressed, with final touch-ups as needed.
